First Year Interview with Gareth McIntyre
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Gareth McIntyre. I’m 39 years old and live in Randalstown with my wife, Stacy, and our three children, Jacob (15), Joshua (14) and Leah (12). I am a member of Grange Baptist Church and have the privilege of serving the Lord through the fellowship's various ministries. In my spare time, I enjoy gardening, water sports, and the occasional city break.
Why did you choose to come to the College?
In recent years, I have felt the call of God on my life for ministry (Acts 26:16). I recognised a deep need to attend Bible College so I could be properly equipped; dedicating time to study the Bible diligently and to grow in understanding, knowledge, and spiritual maturity for faithful service in God’s work.
What has been the best thing/things about it so far?
Some of the best things about College so far include meeting many new people who shine for the Lord, building meaningful relationships, and getting to know them personally. I value learning from their experiences and growing together in grace. Additionally, I really enjoyed our evangelism week, during which we had the opportunity to participate in various ministries for the first time. These opportunities really stretched me beyond my comfort zone, enriching both my spiritual growth and practical ministry experience.
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt during your time so far?
Really, the greatest lesson I’ve learned so far is how much of God’s word there is to know and understand, which makes me very thankful for the privilege of studying His word every day at College and for the opportunity to learn from our lecturers' knowledge and experience. Additionally, the Global and Ministry Perspectives class has really highlighted the many opportunities to serve the Lord and how the need for faithful workers remains great.
What have you found challenging?
Having been out of school and all forms of study for twenty-three years, I’ve found it difficult to stay consistent with all the required reading and learning to write essays. Additionally, time management has been a challenge, balancing work commitments, family, and study. However, by God’s grace, I’ve experienced His strength as I’ve approached one essay at a time, deepening both my discipline and my trust in Him.
What can we pray for you?
I ask you to pray that God would continue to deepen my burden and strengthen my zeal to serve Him faithfully. Pray that by His grace, I may fulfil the responsibilities He has entrusted to me as a husband, a father and His servant. Also, pray for wisdom and strength to do my very best as I study at Irish Baptist College, all for the glory of God.
