Undergraduate BTh/BD (Preparation for Ministry)

    During the interview process, your preferred pathway—BTh or BD (Biblical Languages)—will be discussed and confirmed.

  • Our principal undergraduate pathway (BTh/BD) is the Preparation for Ministry programme. This course provides students with the essential foundations for effective Christian ministry, equipping them to serve confidently in local churches or mission contexts.

    Academically rigorous and intentionally vocational, the programme is designed to prepare students for a wide range of ministry settings.

    Validation

    This course is delivered in partnership with the University of Chester. Teaching is designed and delivered by our College’s lecturers, with the programme validated by the University of Chester to ensure academic quality and standards.

    Upon successful completion, you will graduate with a BTh/BD awarded by the University of Chester.

  • Applicants should normally meet one of the following criteria:

    • Under 21 years of age: A minimum of two A Levels at grade C or above (or equivalent).

    • Aged 21 and over: Previous qualifications or relevant life and work experience deemed equivalent to the standard academic entry requirements.

    • Overseas applicants may study full-time only and must have achieved IELTS 6.5 (or equivalent) if English is not their first language.

    In addition, all applicants are expected to demonstrate:

    • Church, personal, and work references confirming suitability for the programme

    • A clear sense of God’s calling on their life

    • Evidence of ability to meet the course fees

    All successful applicants to undergraduate programmes are required to undergo an Access NI check.

    Who Can Apply

    Applications are welcomed from:

    • Baptists and non-Baptists alike

    • Non-ministry candidates who wish to study theology for intellectual and spiritual development

    International and European students will require a visa to study at the College. Please visit the International Students page or contact us to discuss the options available to you.

  • Each year (or level) of study requires the completion of 120 credits. Modules are valued at either 10 or 20 credits, and the full degree is awarded on successful completion of 360 credits.

    • BD students are required to study the biblical languages

    • Module choices are made in consultation with the Advisor of Studies

    • Credits may be accumulated progressively over time

    Integrated Programme of Study

    The course is built around three integrated streams:

    • Biblical Studies

    • Christian Thought

    • Ministry Studies

    These streams are intentionally interrelated and closely connected to life and practice in ministry.

    Practical and Specialist Training

    • A strong emphasis on practical training, with placements integral to the programme

    • Pastoral Studies: specialist preparation for pastoral ministry

    • Missionary Studies: specialist preparation for cross-cultural ministry

    Teaching, Assessment, and Awards

    • Continuous assessment, including extended essays, reflective journals, group work, and presentations

    • A programme that meets the highest standards of Christian training

    Students may graduate with

    • Bachelor of Theology (BTh) or Bachelor of Divinity (BD) - 360 credits.

    • Diploma of Higher Education in Theology - 240 credits.

    • Certificate of Higher Education in Theology - 120 credits.

    These awards are validated by the University of Chester.

    In addition, students receive an Irish Baptist College Diploma or Certificate alongside their degree studies.

  • The Undergraduate Course enables students to:

    • handle Scripture in a way that is sensitive to both the original and contemporary contexts.

    • understand the nature and implications of a radical commitment to the authority of Scripture.

    • reflect on issues of ministry, mission, society/culture and personal development.

    • develop attitudes and skills for understanding ministry and its demands in the modern world.

    • develop attitudes and skills for sustaining long-term ministry.

    • develop skills and abilities to enable others to think and live biblically.

  • Our lecturers combine strong academic expertise with practical experience in the subjects they teach. Students are taught by a team of full-time staff and external Lecturers, all of whom bring recognised academic qualifications alongside real-world ministry experience.

    Each student is supported by both a Personal Tutor and an Advisor of Studies, who are available to offer guidance and support on academic progress, vocational development, and any study-related concerns.

  • Graduates of the Bachelor of Theology (BTh) and Bachelor of Divinity (BD) programmes, validated by the University of Chester, go on to serve in a wide range of callings, both within the church and beyond. Most enter roles such as pastor, missionary, ministry worker, youth worker, while others pursue careers in secular contexts.

    The academic, practical, and transferable skills developed throughout the programme are highly valued by employers across a variety of sectors.

  • On successful completion of an undergraduate degree, students are eligible to apply for the Master of Theology (MTh) through the Irish Baptist College. This postgraduate programme provides the opportunity for further academic study and theological reflection, enabling graduates to deepen their understanding, develop advanced research skills, and continue their preparation for ministry, mission, or further doctoral study.

Postgraduate Master of Theology

  • To apply for the MTh course, please click here. If you are interested in studying for a Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma, please select the MTh option on the application form.

    Your preferred pathway will be discussed and confirmed during the interview process.

  • Our principal postgraduate programme is the Master of Theology (MTh). Students on the programme come from a wide range of backgrounds: some are building on previous undergraduate study in theology, others are studying alongside active ministry as part of their professional development, and some hold degrees in other disciplines and are now pursuing a theological qualification.

    The programme’s flexible structure enables it to accommodate this diversity. Teaching is delivered through an en bloc format, requiring just 16 days of on-site attendance over two years, with learning supported by independent study and assignment work completed off campus. Assignments are academically rigorous while also encouraging thoughtful reflection on ministry and practice.

    This balance is reflected in the teaching staff, who combine strong academic credentials with extensive practical ministry experience. The programme offers a range of exit points, and all awards are validated by the University of Chester.

    The MTh is a part-time, flexible, and practice-oriented programme, offering several pathways towards the final award.

  • Mode of Study

    This programme is delivered over three years on a part-time basis.

    • Years 1 and 2 combine on-site teaching with guided independent study and assignment completion off campus.

    • Year 3 is devoted to the completion of the dissertation.

    • There are two intake points each year, in September and January.

  • During the course, students have the opportunity to study a range of specialist modules. In the final year, students complete a dissertation on an area of personal and academic interest. It is also possible to exit the programme early with an intermediate award, where appropriate.

    * Compulsory for students who do not already hold a degree or Graduate Diploma in Theology.

  • This flexible Master’s programme offers a range of potential exit points, with all awards validated by the University of Chester.

    • On successful completion of 60 credits (equivalent to one year part-time), students may exit with a Postgraduate Certificate.

    • On successful completion of 120 credits (equivalent to two years part-time), students may exit with a Postgraduate Diploma.

  • We welcome enquiries from those interested in pursuing doctoral research (PhD) through the writing of an original thesis in a specialised area of study. This pathway may be particularly suited to candidates considering a future in teaching or lecturing, and who already hold a Master’s-level qualification in Theology or a cognate discipline.

  • Foundations is designed for anyone who wants to study theology and be better equipped to serve in their local church, in whatever capacity they are called.

    Our goal is to provide rich theological training and fellowship for those who are not employed in a formal ministry context, helping you grow in knowledge and confidence as you serve your church.

    Foundations is highly flexible. You can choose to enrol in a single module, all four modules per year, or any combination in between, allowing you to tailor your studies to fit your schedule and commitments.

  • Foundations is offered in multiple locations, allowing you to choose the option that suits you best:

    • Moira – Irish Baptist College

    • Ballymena – Ballymena Baptist Church

    • Dublin – Grosvenor Road Baptist Church or Jamestown Road Baptist Church

    • Online – via Zoom (login details will be emailed upon registration)

  • Over the course of four years, sixteen modules will be offered. Each module involves both attendance and an essay:

    • Attendance at a module earns one credit.

    • Completion of the module essay is optional; successfully completing it earns an additional one credit.

    • Each module therefore provides the opportunity to gain two credits.

Women’s Discipleship Evening Course

  • This three-year College course, run in partnership with Baptist Women, meets on Tuesday evenings from 7.00 pm –9.30 pm. Each session includes two one-hour lectures, which may be attended either in person or via Zoom. Our aim is not only to inform, but to equip women to serve more effectively within their local church.

  • This course is designed for women who want to grow in their faith, deepen their love for the Lord, and expand their knowledge of His Word. It focuses on discipleship, an essential journey for everyone.

Ladies’ Study Fellowship

  • This one-year College course, in partnership with Baptist Women, runs across two 12-week semesters and includes the completion of four classes and four assignments. There is also time built in for coffee, fellowship, and prayer.

    A key feature of this course is that Ladies’ Study Fellowship students attend classes alongside Preparation for Ministry students, providing a rich and engaging learning environment.

  • This course is designed for women who wish to grow in their faith, deepen their love for the Lord, and expand their knowledge of His Word. Held on Thursday mornings, it also provides a wonderful opportunity to build friendships and enjoy meaningful fellowship.

  • The Ladies’ Study Fellowship meets on Thursday mornings, 10:00 am –12:45 pm, at the College building in Moira.

  • Topics covered include Christianity and Culture, Mission, the Conduct of Worship, and the Gospels.

  • Successful completion of the course leads to a College Certificate in Christian Education, based on at least 75% attendance and submission of all assignments to an acceptable standard.

Gap Year Programme

  • Places on the Gap Year in Theology programme are limited, so an application process is required. The first step is to submit an application form. The College will then request a church reference and arrange an informal interview. Applicants will usually hear whether their application has been successful within a few days.

  • This one-year course is designed for anyone aged 18–24 who wants to develop their theological thinking. Participants follow a tailored programme, with classes on Bible communication, evangelism, worship, the Gospels, and the intersection of Christianity and culture, among other topics. Classes are complemented by guided reading and tutorials for discussion of theological issues.

    The course is flexible and can be adapted to suit individual circumstances. It makes an excellent gap year, or can be structured as the first year of the Preparation for Ministry Course for those considering further theological study.

    We also work in partnership with Baptist Missions, offering a mix of college-based theological study and practical mission placement.

One Day - Flexible Ministry Training

  • This is an Irish Baptist College course leading to a qualification from IBC. Students can attend one day a week, choosing modules to suit their interests and schedule. You can enrol for either one semester (12 weeks) or two semesters (24 weeks). There is flexibility to attend for a second year on a different day.

  • The course is ideal for anyone wanting to train for church or mission work. It is particularly suitable for those who may be in employment or other commitments but can dedicate one day a week to study, those serving in a voluntary capacity, or anyone considering vocational ministry in the future. This flexible format provides theological and practical training to fit around your schedule.

  • Classes are held one day per week, Monday through Thursday. We aim to accommodate your schedule and can help you build a day that works best for you.

    This programme exists to support, refresh, and deepen theological understanding for those actively serving in church or mission contexts.

  • This programme is aimed at those already involved in Christian ministry, whether in pastoral, missionary, youth, children’s, or other forms of church leadership. It is ideal for those who wish to develop in a specific area, strengthen their theological foundations, or receive ongoing theological input while continuing in active ministry.
